In 1959, the Chinese invasion and occupation of Tibet compelled approximately 85,000 Tibetans, led by their revered spiritual and political leader, the 14th Dalai Lama, to seek refuge in India and various other locations. Amidst this historical upheaval, Chandragiri nestled some 110 kilometres away from the tranquil southern town of Berhampur in Odisha, emerged as one of six pivotal settlements established across the nation. Within this refuge, lovingly referred to as Phuntsokling by Tibetan residents, translating to the "Land of Happiness and Plenty," a sacred accord for a monastery was bestowed by the Dalai Lama in 1998. The monastery's foundations were laid in 2003, culminating in its majestic completion in 2008, a labour of love and devotion that came to fruition at an approximate cost of Rs 8 crores.
